A Signature Celebration Recreated to become Legendary
Ybor City is known for it’s eclectic, eccentric, creative types who love to celebrate any occasion. For 7 years the Ybor Merchants Association has produced Fantasma Fest, a weekend of free, family-friendly events. On Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 a.m., the Little Monster’s Pumpkin Patch & Promenade begins in Centro Ybor. Children are provided free pumpkins, and spooky friends help decorate them. After the children decorate their pumpkins, children in costume trick-or-treat down 7th Avenue at participating Ybor businesses. The pumpkin patch is immediately followed by the cut-throat competition of the Big Monsters Bed Race at 3:00 p.m., which pits local businesses against one another in mad-cap fun. Then, on Sunday, October 28th at 1:00 p.m., the weekend is capped off with the Hell on Wheels Classic Car & Vintage Motorcycle Show, which features over 200 entries all along historic 7th Avenue. 2018 will begin the Inaugural ‘Legend of the Pumpkin King Parade’ to kick-off the Fantasma Fest festivities on Friday, October 26th at 7:00 p.m.
The “Legend of the Pumpkin King Parade” has a past all its own. What started in the 70’s as a quirky, rather impromptu gathering of artists to celebrate Tampa, a.k.a “The Big Guava”, ushered in the creation of the Artists and Writers Ball in the early 80’s when Ybor City was in dire need of economic revitalization. The Ball then morphed into the “Mama Guava Stumble”, which was held in October during election season to add fuel to the revelry with satire, spoofing of politicians and your usual theatric commentary on life.
The moral of this tale is that the Legend of the Pumpkin King parade brings the business community full circle again. We have taken the best qualities from the old parade and have added a more creative direction focusing more on the costumes! The Ybor Collaborative, a coalition of the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce, Ybor Merchants Association and GaYBOR, was established to produce signature events for the greater good of Ybor City. Tom DeGeorge, Chairman of the Ybor Chamber, stated, “The Pumpkin King parade serves as a blue print of how these groups work together and take responsibility for their own community.” This event is now free to spectators and the cost to participate in the parade is nominal of a true “Working Man’s Parade”. In further cross promotion the parade will kick-off the Fantasma Fest, a weekend of free fun for all demographics.
